Games Cinematic
THE BRIEF
The Chronomark watch exists at the intersection of game design and physical product, an object significant enough to the Starfield narrative to be sold as a collector's item in the Constellation Edition, and important enough to the game's world that it needed its own cinematic context. Bethesda and AKQA needed a film that could serve two purposes simultaneously: a promotional trailer that made the watch desirable to collectors, and an in-game narrative device that established the object's place in Constellation's story. We brought in Territory director Onur Senturk to create that cinematic, not to design the watch itself, but to build the world that gave it meaning.
THE CREATIVE APPROACH
The visual solution came from the watch's own design language. The star maps that serve as the cinematic's central motif carry both symbolic and aesthetic similarities to a clock face, concentric orbital diagrams that speak to timekeeping and navigation simultaneously, the two things a space explorer's timepiece needs to do. The first map is a replica of our own solar system, with its harmonious gravitational orbits rendered as an elegant two-dimensional diagram. Created initially in Adobe Illustrator to establish the layout's foundation, the maps were brought into After Effects for fluid animations that convey humanity's expansion into the cosmos without losing the graphic precision of the cartographic reference.
The 3D model of the Chronomark watch was brought into Cinema4D and treated with the cinematic's design language and textures, contextualised within the Starfield universe rather than presented as a product object. The distinction matters: the film's job was not to sell a watch but to make an audience feel what it means to wear one in a world where the stars are the frontier.
THE OUTCOME
The Starfield Chronomark cinematic served as both launch promotional material and in-game narrative device, one piece of film doing two jobs simultaneously, the commercial and the contextual inseparable from each other. Starfield launched in September 2023 as one of the most anticipated games in Bethesda's history, with the Constellation Edition selling out on pre-order. For Territory, the project demonstrated the studio's games cinematic capability at its most precise: not spectacle for its own sake, but world-building in service of a specific object and the story it carries.
